MekEngine
A MechWarrior 2 (1995) remake, rebuilt in Unity.
MekEngine loads your original MechWarrior 2 game files and puts the mechs, the menus, the missions and the combat back together in a modern engine, and now lets you take it online against other players.
You'll hear it called a remake, a remaster or a mod, and any of those is fine by me. Technically it's a reimplementation: a new engine that reads the original data.
It isn't a perfect 1:1 copy, and it doesn't try to be. The goal is for it to feel the way you remember it.
MekEngine aims to be the one-stop shop for playing the MechWarrior 2 trilogy on modern gaming systems. It fully supports MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat today, and work is already underway on Ghost Bear's Legacy.
Latest build, about 126 MB. You'll need your own copy of MechWarrior 2 to play.
Linux build (.7z), about 78 MB.
What's in it right now
Shell
Main menu, clan hall, ready room, briefings, mech bay and debriefings, using the original art, video and music.
Mechs
Original models and animations, plus procedural ankle articulation.
Combat
Weapons, projectiles, debris and explosions with dynamic lighting, built on Unity DOTS.
Rendering
HDRP with optional ray tracing.
Sound
3D positional audio with the original falloff and distance-based delay.
Multiplayer
Play online against other MekEngine players. Browse games in the lobby, chat, and drop into a match. It runs on in-house lag-tolerant peer-to-peer technology, and it is immensely better than the original game's NetMech. Different editions of MechWarrior 2 can play together.
Mods
Loose-file replacement for menu music and world and mech textures, at any resolution. Modding guide
Where it stands
This is an early build. Plenty works, but not everything is finished yet, and I'm sure there are bugs hiding in there somewhere. If you find one, please tell me.
